About Marcus Aurelius Meditations

Meditations is a series of personal writings by Marcus Aurelius, Roman Emperor from 161 to 180 AD, recording his private notes to himself and ideas on Stoic philosophy. Marcus Aurelius wrote the 12 books of the Meditations in Koine Greek as a source for his own guidance and self-improvement. It is possible that large portions of the work were written at Sirmium, where he spent much time planning military campaigns from 170 to 180. It is unlikely that Marcus Aurelius ever intended his Meditations to be published and the work has no official title, so "Meditations" is one of several titles commonly assigned to the collection. These writings take the form of quotations varying in length from one sentence to long paragraphs.

Famous quotes from this edition of Meditations

  • “Do not act as if thou wert going to live ten thousand years. Death hangs over thee. While thou livest, while it is in thy power, be good.”
  • “Why do you hunger for length of days? The point of life is to follow reason and the divine spirit and to accept whatever nature sends you. To live in this way is not to fear death, but to hold it in contempt. Death is only a thing of terror for those unable to live in the present. Pass on your way, then, with a smiling face, under the smile of him who bids you go.”
  • “Do not then consider life a thing of any value. For look at the immensity of time behind thee, and to the time which is before thee, another boundless space. In this infinity then what is the difference between him who lives three days and him who lives three generations?”
  • “TA cucumber is bitter. Throw it away. There are briars in the road. Turn aside from them. This is enough. Do not add, "And why were such things made in the world?" ”
  • "If thou art pained by any external thing, it is not this that disturbs thee, but thy own judgment about it. And it is in thy power to wipe out this judgment now."

What a reader says about Marcus Aurelius Meditations

We find several recurring themes in The Meditations develop self-discipline to gain control over judgments and desires; overcoming a fear of death; value an ability to retreat into a rich, interior mental life (one's inner citadel); recognize the world as a manifestation of the divine; live according to reason; avoid luxury and opulence. But generalizations will not approach the richness and wisdom nuggets a reader will find in Marcus's actual words.-Glenn Russel

"I was influenced to read this book after seeing a lot of people recommend it and how influential the book was in changing their life. I read this version and a couple of other versions at the same time to get a better perspective on the book.

Throughout the book there is a plethora of information and wisdom. The words and advice within the book is food for the soul. I was inspired, motivated and learnt lot on life, pain, intelligence and life in general.

Though Aurelius himself never intended to publish his work since the work is mostly his observations, perceptions and ideas that he lusted down in his notebook to remind himself of lessons he considered beneficial to himself. The book is divided into twelve books which contain his words on life, death, knowledge as well as perplexing issues like thee nature and purpose of man, philosophy and religion as well as personal development of an individual.

Some parts of the book may seem a little gloomy and melancholy especially the constant reminders on death and shortness of life. But otherwise the book is a mine of information.

This is a book you have to read again and again so you can adopt the lessons and incorporate them unto your life."

  • The content of the book is great however this particular publication is printed in an illegibly small font. The publisher is very cheap and has ruined a wonderful masterpiece and made of it into a very frustrating experience.
  • I've long appreciated the Stoics, but hadn't ever gotten around to reading this classic. Some truth is universal across cultures and centuries, and Aurelius' gaze is steady, even-tempered and wise. I was inspired when he “recordeth what and of whom, whether Parents, Friends or Masters; by their good examples, or good advice and counsel, he had learned.” He tells us to be humble, and “whensoever though wilt rejoice thyself, think and meditate upon those good parts and especial gifts, which thou hast observed in any of them that live with thee.” I actively did this in letters to my mentors, wife and parents - a gift for them, and also for myself.
  • I love this book however this print has a line down most pages where no ink is printed and letters are missing making an already difficult text hard to decipher
  • Firstly, This review concerns only the physical aspects of the book, it is not an arrogant ameture critique of a magisterial work of which has & will always continue to remain relevant (I can’t stand the latter).

Text The font is larger than what is commonly used so it’s very easy to read and stay focused visually.

The cover is very nice and glossy and well made.

    Potential Con
*Im not sure if the original had a Table of Contents* but the edition shown on the photo above does not have one. I appreciate translations of great works that honor the original. Therefore, If that’s how MARCUS intended it to be, than this edition is perfect especially considering the price
  • If you want to be a leader in work, politics or military you can find many great examples within this book.
  • I will be looking for another version of this to find a better and easy to digest translation. As a translator myself in 2 different languages, i think this one is painfully literal. It is not flowing and Marcus deserves better )
  • Amazing and historically a Stoic manual. Marcus Aurelius was the philosopher emperor. He made one mistake and that was letting his son live to be emperor
