Ndaba's story starts during apartheid, his granddad in prison, the whole country in the middle of bloody conflict. The child's-eye view of all the violence and racism is gut-wrenching, and even though Ndaba had an amazing life with Mandela, his family was terribly damaged by apartheid. He talks about systemic racism, progress, politics and fatherhood using African folk tales and the stories of his grandfather. Highly recommending for schools, libraries, families, and everybody I can think of. The author is cool and funny and a great storyteller like his grandfather. He seems like a really a remarkable person who is out to change the world. I hope every young person in the US reads this book. And every old person. And every person in between.
