Keep your enemies close and your sister closer.

Though Chloe was the younger of the two Taylor sisters, she always seemed to be the one in charge. She was the honor roll student with big dreams and an even bigger work ethic. Nicky—always restless and more than a little reckless—was the opposite of her ambitious little sister. She floated from job to job and man to man, and stayed close to home in Cleveland.

For a while, it seemed that both sisters had found happiness. Chloe earned a scholarship to an Ivy League school and moved to New York City, where she landed a coveted publishing job. Nicky married promising young attorney Adam Macintosh and gave birth to a baby boy they named Ethan. The Taylor sisters became virtual strangers.

Now, more than fifteen years later, their lives are drastically different—and Chloe is married to Adam. When he’s murdered by an intruder at the couple’s East Hampton beach house, Chloe reluctantly allows her teenage stepson’s biological mother—her estranged sister, Nicky—back into her life. But when the police begin to treat Ethan as a suspect in his father’s death, the two sisters are forced to unite . . . and to confront the truth behind family secrets they have tried to bury in the past.

"Another great read by Alafair Burke. A story about the complex lives between sisters. And an assuming perfect family, but as the story breaks down, you see a whole different tale come to light. There are secrets and some final twists that keep you turning those pages. I honestly couldn't put the book down, lost track of time wondering about this young boy. Well written, interesting, enjoyable read."

The Better Sister A Novel Alafair Burke Books Reviews

  • Another great read by Alafair Burke. A story about the complex lives between sisters. And an assuming perfect family, but as the story breaks down, you see a whole different tale come to light. There are secrets and some final twists that keep you turning those pages. I honestly couldn't put the book down, lost track of time wondering about this young boy. Well written, interesting, enjoyable read.
  • It's fast and it can handle hairpin turns! The pace of a Burke novel is one of the things I love about her work. They're hard to put down because the reader is being pulled along at breakneck speed.

And about those hairpin turns There are no fixes - everything flows, so the reader has to be able to remember everything previously presented because there is nothing that wasn't laid down earlier.

What I particularly like about this book along with The Wife and The Ex (they form a trilogy of a sort) is the thoughtful and layered exploration of familial relationships. They're not always what they seem, and sometimes that's a good thing, and sometimes it is most definitely not. Sometimes the lies we tell best illuminate the truth.

I won't even hint at the resolution. Regular readers know to be surprised (regularly), and for the newbies You'll like it.
  • The Better Sister kept me guessing until the end and the solution absolutely surprised me! What more could you ask for from a mystery? If you have read The Ex and The Wife and enjoyed them, this is one you will also definitely enjoy. I could not put it down. The characters grew through the book and my feelings changed about at least three of them from beginning to end. Get your summer reading off to a great start! Enjoy!
  • In her author’s note, Burke describes (without being a spoiler) this novel together with The Ex and The Wife as exploring “the complexity of female relationships and the diverse roles that women play in contemporary society. As we juggle busy lives, we often show different faces to our spouses, exes, children, parents, siblings, and coworkers, all while trying to know and be true to ourselves. The Better Sister, specifically, is about sometimes conflicting connections between adult siblings."

I found the story fascinating having been for many years the sole male in a female-dominated family.

It also shows Burke's knowledge of criminal law and trials (which she teaches, having been a former prosecutor).
  • Poorly structured. Unbelievable. Two-dimensional and unlikeable characters. Name dropping to establish social status. Morally bankrupt. Twists to explain motivation stretch belief.
  • Alafair Burke is an author who has always delivered solid characters, interesting plots, with good pacing. Her last few books have really kicked it up a few notches and proven her to be among the best authors writing these days. THE BETTER SISTER is her best book yet. Twists and turns, clues dropped in very subtle ways that make sense later, an ever-changing reaction from the reader. One of my favorite reads recently! Will probably re-read it in a month or so, in order to better appreciate the skill shown in writing this book
  • If you enjoyed The Ex &The Wife this book will not disappoint. This book was a fast read and a pretty good page turner. Read it in one day. Give it a try.
  • Really not a good book and I hate myself for finishing it. Shallow characters and few surprises, how many times did I mutter "stupid" while reading. Not even a good "beach read"
