“Gabourey Sidibe’s delightful memoir offers a memorable look into what happens when a black girl’s dreams come true, from the inside out. Sidibe is fearless, incredibly funny, and gorgeously open. What she offers of herself in these pages is a gift.”—Roxane Gay
In This Is Just My Face, Gabourey Sidibe—the “gives-zero-effs queen of Hollywood AND perceptive best friend in your head” (Lena Dunham)—paints her unconventional rise to fame with full-throttle honesty. Sidibe tells engrossing, inspiring stories about her Bed-Stuy/Harlem/Senegalese family life with a polygamous father and a gifted mother who supports her two children by singing in the subway, her first job as a phone sex “talker,” and her Oscar-nominated role in Lee Daniels’s Precious.
Sidibe’s memoir hits hard with self-knowing dispatches on friendship, celebrity, weight, haters, fashion, race, and depression (“Sidibe’s heartfelt exploration of insecurity . . . makes us love her” —O Magazine). Irreverent, hilarious, and untraditional, This Is Just My Face will resonate with anyone who has ever felt different, and with anyone who has ever felt inspired to make a dream come true.
“This memoir [is] a book you will want to give your daughter.” —New York Times
“Sidibe’s hilarious Twitter account is no fluke—the Empire actress’s memoir about growing up in New York City and finding unexpected fame in Hollywood is sharp, witty, and wonderfully substantive.” —Entertainment Weekly

This Is Just My Face Try Not to Stare eBook Gabourey Sidibe Reviews
- First I will honestly admit I have never seen Gabourey's work. I don't even enjoy autobiographical works.
I absolutely enjoyed this book despite this. She had interviewed on Elvis Durran and then later on the Daily Show and I thought that Gabourey seemed like a funny vivacious woman with a book that looked to be as fun.
I wasn't expecting the emotional rollercoaster this book took me on. Yes, there was a lot I could only appreciate as an outsider which I expected having come from a completely different background. What was amazing was I also found plenty to relate to.
Gabourey talks about the struggle against depression and feeling like you don't deserve what you have even when you do. And I wanted to meet her and tell her "Yes! That's it exactly!" Then and many other times. Like boyfriends, feel that. Feeling awkward? All the time.
What I'm trying to say is read the book. It's incredibly inspirational and she is wonderful about sharing her life and fears. I know some people will go into this thinking they won't get anything out of it. You will, trust me. - I am a 72 yr old white lady. I loved Gabourey story. She keeps it real. She helped me deal with some of my own issues. A good read. Would love to see her in alot more movies. She's an excellent actress. She's real pretty, too.
- I have read hundreds of biographies in my lifetime. Outside of fiction, biographies are one of my favorites genres to read. Why? Because I love to learn about other people's lives and how they triumphed over their life's trials and tribulations to find meaning and purpose in their lives.
Gabourey "Gabby's" story is no different. Yet her struggles to find meaning and purpose in a world that labeled her Fat, Black and Ugly since she was a small child touches your soul
We met Gabourey, as Precious in the Lee Daniels filmed based on the best-selling book PUSH by Sapphire a few years ago. The novel PUSH is one of my all time favorites books that I read decades ago when it was first published. Gabourey was awesome in the movie that literally changed her life.
This Is Just My Face is Gabourey's auto-biography that captures you from the first page and has you laughing, crying, hurting, screaming and rejoicing as she takes the reader on her life's journey of pain, depression, poverty, self-discovery, purpose, fame and fortune. A MUST READ!

msanfra.com - This book is funny! A wonderful read, and I guarantee you will not be able to put it down. I also purchased this book on "Audibles", it's an audio book store, so I could listen to it while I'm out and about! My absolute favorite part of her audible book, is hearing her pronounce her name, and what it means (So beautiful)! Gabourey Sidibe, is a true gem, and so is her book!

- I can't lie, I got this book just because I'm a fan and I wanted to support. I never imagined how much you would inspire me. I got the audio because I figured I could multitask while listening but that was not the case lol. NOTHING got done while I listened to you. Your personality is awesome! Thank you for telling us your story. I wish you so much more success in life! I look forward to seeing you more often on the big screen.
- "I gave this memoir 5 stars because I feel like a memoir should have a good writing voice, be honest and revealing, be juicy, and if possible inspirational/ funny. Sidibe met all of these aspects in her work.
The story reads like she speaks, and is basically somewhat of a one- breath girly rant on her life thus far. The first quarter of the book is the juicy part, then again at the end when she talks about her questionable job choice and her surgery. Otherwise, there's just a little information with a lot of blabbering. The read is fun though, she gives a pretty cute rant.
If I had to guess, I'd suspect that if you want to know about the real Gabourey and her life, you'll find this book endearing. However, if you're looking for a train wreck, you'll pick apart her speech, her life, her choices, and probably her race and looks in criticism and hate the book. - Love it! A book you really don't want to put down. I purchased because I'm a fan and wanted to know more about this talented Woman. I love how she talks about her family's history, very intriguing. I resonated with many of the stories she tells so very well. I also really love that the book is written how one would actually speak, with common vocabulary. I hate when i pick up a book filled with words no one uses in daily life. I find it unnecessarily pretentious and choppy. Down to earth, confident and unique Gabourey! Look forward to seeing her on the big screen again.
