- Looking to update an old Pillsbury "Best of the Bake-Off" cookbook, I ordered this one expecting something like the old one but with new recipes. Boy, was I disappointed! Most of the recipes call for boxed cake mix, refrigerated rolls and biscuits, dry salad dressing mix, boxed pudding, whipped topping, and the penultimate of disgusting - canned soup! This is more of an assembly book than a cook book, as you are using pre-made, processed foods. I suppose you can substitute homemade items for some of the processed ones, but if you have to do that why use this book to begin with? Just get a better cookbook.
In hindsight perhaps I should not be surprised as it is a Pillsbury book, but the older version I have, also by Pillsbury, was not this way at all. Those recipes were all scratch baking and cooking. - Over the years I have often turned to Pillsbury Bake-Off recipes for innovative appetizers, meals and desserts. I was happily surprised to discover that this cookbook, of over 350 award-winning recipes from the Bake-Off contests, had been published. I bought it recently and have not been disappointed.
It is true that many of the recipes call for prepackaged or convenience foods. However, the time saved in preparation and the wonderful tasting results prove that, sometimes, the ends justify the means.
Some of my favorites include Corn and Pumpkin Soup with Jalapeno Pesto, White Chile with Salsa Verde, Creamy Spinach and Tortellini; Grilled Chicken and Mango Corn Salad, Crafty Crescent Lasagna, Salsa Couscous Chicken, California Casserole, Chewy Peanut Brownie Bars, Lemon Meringue Dessert Squares...and I could go on and on.
The photographs are beautiful and illustrate the finished product, as well as provide some attractive serving ideas. The step-by-step instructions are easy to follow. "Best Of The Bake-Off" also provides a hands-on history of the evolution of American cooking over the last 50+ years, with short spotlight stories about many of the Bake-Off winners. This fun and easy-to-use cookbook is, in and of itself, a real prize-winner!!
JANA - I am covered with flour, my hands are greasy with butter and I reek of vanilla!!! Great cookbook, so glad I bought it, it has a ton of recipes so there are plenty for any home cook to use from appetizers to desserts!!

- There is a page torn out of the book. I don’t mind a little damage, but I bought this book because it is an old favorite cookbook. It’s very disappointing to be missing a page.
- I made the Banana Crunch cake included in this cookbook and it was heavenly and is now my favorite cake. You can't go wrong with buying the cookbook. The seller got it to my quickly.
- Beautifully assembled book; lets me get rid of 30 years accumulation of the 'little books'. My daughter was delighted by her windfall of all the little books. I'm delighted with the size and quality of the book;
- I have two friends that own this and insisted I get this cookbook. Being a copy cat I did, and am I glad. It is almost a coffee table book, big and pretty, with yummy looking recipes, easy directions, and high altitude instructions as well.
